Flush And Non-Flush Casement Windows – What Separates Them?

If you browse our window range online or in your local County showroom, you will notice that we design and supply flush casement windows and non-flush casement windows.

For someone unfamiliar with them, leave it to us to explain what they are and how they differ from each other.

A flush casement window is called ‘flush’ such because it has a flush finish, or to explain it more easily, its surface is totally flat and it’s because its window sashes sit bang flush with the window frame.

You can probably now guess what a non-flush casement is. Yes, it’s a casement design with window sashes that overlap the window frame.

Viewing the two products from side-on will outline what we mean, and meanwhile, let us fill you in on some other details.

The origination of flush and non-flush casement windows

The non-flush casement window came along first, developed in the 18th century, and still to this day Britain’s most popular window style. It was originally made from iron, so blacksmiths would build them.

Not too long after, in the 19th century, the flush casement emerged and it wasn’t constructed with iron. No, by then wood had superseded it as the favoured window building material, until that was later overtaken by UPVC and aluminium.

Flush windows make a widespread return

Flush windows fell a little bit out of favour for a spell as other window styles surfaced, but they have regained their popularity as householders throughout Sussex and Kent scout out windows with a different look.

Our reaction to this has been to introduce a flush window collection, heavily influenced by the design of a classic flush casement window and produced as UPVC, aluminium and timber versions that satisfy contemporary window demands.

Do I go with a flush or non-flush design?

Planners will generally only accept authentic window designs such as flush UPVC windows for homes in conservation areas because of how successfully they uphold the lines and proportions of traditional casements, should you live in such a place.

Flush sash windows are also great for modern residences due to their wonderful symmetry and for these types of installations, will largely be finished in Black or Anthracite Grey.

A non-flush casement window rarely looks out of place wherever it’s fitted, that’s why it reigns supreme as Britain’s most popular window style.
