UPVC Vs. Composite: Which Front Door Should I Choose?

Choosing the right front door for your home is crucial, as it not only affects the visual appeal but also plays a significant role in ensuring safety and security.

If your current door is lacking in both appearance and performance, it may be time to consider a replacement. When exploring options, you will likely come across UPVC and composite doors, and we are here to assist you in making the right choice.

You are probably familiar with UPVC doors, which are commonly seen and feature an insulated steel frame wrapped in un-plasticised polyvinyl chloride. However, you may be less acquainted with composite doors.

What exactly is a composite door?

A composite door is crafted using a combination of materials, including wood, UPVC, foam, and a Glass Reinforced Plastic (GRP) skin.

These diverse materials enhance the door’s strength, durability, and thermal efficiency, making County’s composite doors among the best available.

Our composite doors feature a meticulously perfected wood grain effect on the GRP skin, which creates an authentic timber look. While capturing the beauty of timber, composite doors outperform their wooden counterparts in terms of weather resistance and durability.

The different components of a composite door

How does a composite door differ from a UPVC door?

In stark contrast to the construction of a composite door, a UPVC door is made solely from plastic. Additionally, a composite door has a greater depth and thicker frame, measuring around 44mm compared to the 28mm thickness of a UPVC door.

Due to the use of multiple materials, composite doors do come at a higher cost.

However, it’s important to note that a UPVC door is not an inferior product despite the price difference. UPVC doors still offer exceptional security features and superb energy efficiency.

Will cleaning my composite or UPVC door be a challenge?

Fortunately, maintaining County’s UPVC and composite doors is incredibly straightforward. Every four months, simply use warm soapy water to clean the frame surfaces. Avoid using solvent-based cleaners or abrasive materials.

Additionally, lubricate the locks, hinges, handles, and other door furniture on an annual basis.

During severe weather conditions, we recommend checking the thresholds and drainage holes for any debris-related issues.
