With decades of experience in the window industry, we’ve gained a solid understanding of the many styles available, and we’re always keen to share that knowledge.
If you’re thinking about replacing your windows but aren’t quite sure where to start, we’ve pulled together a quick guide to some of the most popular options.
These eight window types each offer something unique. We hope this makes your decision a little easier, and a lot less stressful.
Casement, Sash & Tilt and Turn Windows
Casement – Hinged at the side and opening outwards, casement windows are a flexible option for both contemporary and traditional homes. Removing the central mullion gives you clear, uninterrupted views and excellent ventilation. Paired with quality glazing and tight seals, they’re a top choice for thermal efficiency too.
Sash – Instantly recognisable with their vertical or horizontal sliding panels, sash windows are a staple of Victorian and Georgian homes. Their elegant design adds period character, and modern versions are easy to clean.
Tilt and Turn – These innovative windows can tilt slightly inwards at the top or open fully inwards like a door, making them incredibly easy to clean and great for airflow. A popular choice in modern homes, their tight seals and advanced glazing help deliver impressive insulation.

Sliding, Bay & Bow Windows
Sliding – Sliding windows open by gliding side to side, making them a smart choice for tighter spaces where there’s not much room to swing a window open. They let in plenty of fresh air and light, and when fitted with efficient glazing, they hold their own in terms of energy performance.
Bay – Typically made up of three panels, one in the centre and two set at an angle, bay windows are brilliant for brightening up a room and creating a sense of extra space. Often seen on period homes, they’re at their best when fitted with energy-efficient glass to help offset the larger glazed area.
Bow – A softer, more curved take on the bay, bow windows usually have four to six matching panels that gently arch outwards. They’re perfect for making the most of your view and suit both traditional and modern properties. Expect a solid level of thermal efficiency, particularly with the right glazing.

Rooflight/Skylight & Flush Windows
Rooflight/Skylight – These windows sit neatly within the roof to brighten up lofts, extensions or any space that needs a bit more daylight. Whether fixed or vented, they’re a brilliant way to open up a room, and with the right glazing, they’re also highly energy efficient.
Flush – With a flat finish that sits flush against the frame, these windows offer a sleek, understated style that suits both old and new homes. Made mostly from UPVC or aluminium, they’re low maintenance, energy efficient, and great at keeping the heat in.

A Little Extra Guidance
The best window style for your home is the one that suits its age, style, and, most importantly, what you love the most!
Frames – You can choose from four materials (UPVC, aluminium, timber, or composite), each offering its own benefits depending on your preferences.
Glass – You have options for double or triple glazing, low-e glass, as well as frosted or tinted options for privacy and light control.
Cost – Costs will vary depending on the material, size, and complexity of the design, with UPVC casement windows typically being the most affordable.
